The Bowles Hall Alumni Association was established in 2005 to provide leadership and support to the effort of reestablishing the Bowles Hall Residential College experience in a renovated Bowles Hall. We have banded together to capitalize on the strengths and passion of those who have reaped the benefits of the Bowles Hall experience in their lives to ensure that it is available again to UC Berkeley students.
The Bowles Hall Alumni Association is an IRS-registered 501(c)(9) California nonprofit corporation. At last count, BHAA comprised 616 current members from the classes of 1934 through 2016. BHAA is also affiliated with the California Alumni Association (as a Gold member).
At their annual joint meeting in November 2013, the governing boards of the Bowles Hall Foundation and the Bowles Hall Alumni Association voted to eliminate the Alumni Association dues-paying format, instead seeking annual gifts from Bowles Hall alumni and Friends to the Bowles Hall Foundation, which are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. What does it mean to be a member of the Bowles Hall Alumni Association?
Because all Bowles alumni are now considered BHAA members, dues are no longer needed to maintain your membership. As opposed to being viewed as an obligation, making an annual donation or pledge allows us to contribute financially in ways unencumbered by our dues structure. This makes it a more personal reflection of engagement and commitment to our project to restore the Bowles Hall experience in a restored Bowles Hall. And, like other charitable giving, annual gifts are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
Why become a BHAA member?
- To demonstrate your support of the residential college concept and the re-establishment of the Bowles Hall Residential College in a restored Bowles Hall
- Establish or re-establish contact with Bowlesmen of many generations
- Honor a loved one/family member who was a Bowlesman by becoming a “Friend of Bowles Hall” (spouses/children/grandchildren are encouraged).
If there are no more dues, how do I join?
By participating in the activities of the Bowles Hall Foundation, such as providing financial support, or actively participating in any of the various teams developing the Student-Centered Operations, student career counseling, renovation and/or interior decorating, capital campaign, UCB relationships and many more. To realize our ambitious efforts, it’s imperative that we expand our ranks and alumni participation in the BHAA. Despite many hundreds (indeed, thousands) of hours trying to connect, only a small fraction of former Bowles Hall residents are in our rolls. To increase those numbers, we’ve established a Class Leader structure in which alumni serve as points of contact and recruitment for one, two or three years of their residence in the Hall. Due to existing relationships and common experiences, contacts should be easy and fulfilling and enthusiastic responses more likely.
